Next week I have two out of the country friends coming to New York to visit, one from Montreal (who's been here before) and another one from Ireland (who hasn't), in the same week. They're both coming with me to the Bouncing Souls/Lifetime/None More Black at Webster Hall but I want to give them other ideas of cool stuff to do.
Usually when I'm showing people from out of town NYC, I show them Generation Records and other stores, take them to eat somewhere, Astor Place/Village-ish area, St. Mark's Place and all the downtown stuff. I've lived here my whole life and take for granted a lot of the "touristy" type stuff here so when someone asks me for shit to do, I never know what to tell them.
Anything cool but not terribly typical would be helpful suggestions. I know the museums in the city have a free admission on Friday thing which is helpful.

One of the things that I notice tourists love to do is stop in the middle of the sidewalk for no reason.
On Sunday The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater does a free show that rules. You have to line up by 6:30 if you want to get in. The show runs from 9:30-11:00.

ride the staten island ferry. its free and tourists LOVE it.
i also like taking people to coney island. i find it odd when they seem more excited by the outdoor subway ride than the actual amusement park, but whatever.

A friend comes all the way from Ireland to visit you, but it's too far of a commute to go to the Bronx for a cool, unique experience? Interesting. Person isn't coming from Ireland specifically to visit ME, actually, and I'm not suggesting to go with them, I'm just saying in general I wouldn't go out of my way to go to the Bronx Zoo. I would suggest it to them, but I myself can't seem to bring myself to go. I don't have a car and when you live in south Brooklyn, Bronx Zoo is a far trip by public transit. Also, the people are coming with their significant others and also not coming specifically to visit ME, as I said. I was mostly looking for suggestions to give them to do. Wouldn't want to get in the way of anyone else's romantic holidays. Maybe I should have clarified. Mostly was just looking for ideas for them since both friends asked me what's some fun stuff to do here.

get off at the 6 train brooklyn bridge stop, walk over the brooklyn bridge, turn around on the brooklyn side and walk to the waterfront. grimaldi's pizza will have a long line, but it is worth it. on the waterfront is the brooklyn ice cream factory. its a fun time.
